Chapter 12

VILLAIN, noun; 1. a cruel and malicious person capable of great crimes, 2. Someone who deliberately chooses to be without honor. From the Middle English “villein,” meaning “servant” or “someone who works for a larger community of people.”

J. Wyatt Ferral stared at Poacher in shock. “Wait…” His eyebrows rose. “They got arrested? How’d that happen?”

“Oh, that wasn’t their fault!” Poacher rolled his eyes. “They were totally set-up!”

“It was that fucking cashier, man! I watched the security tape!” Multifarious nodded seriously. “She’s probably like evil or something, and Cynic just picked up on it. He was completely right! We don’t have to be insulted by some girl who looks like the fucking Wendy’s mascot!”

Cory thought about it for a beat, as if seriously considering the matter. “…Yeah, I can see that. Especially the new one.” He frowned. “And why did they change their logo, anyway? I mean, does it make any sense to modernize a mascot dedicated to ‘Old-fashioned Hamburgers’? I don’t…”

“Shut up, Cory.” Wyatt snapped. “This is serious.”

“I agree.” Multifarious tapped one finger against the table meaningfully. “I think we should go to that fucking store, and take the bitch out! Hands?”

Hands around the table flew up in support of the plan. The Consortium was always like that. He had once heard the group described as ‘piranha,’ and he’d have to agree with that assessment. They hated to see a victim get away, especially if there was blood in the water.

“No one is going near that store again.” Oz declared. “I know everyone on their staff, and no one there is to be harmed in any way.”

Wyatt turned to glare at him. “And why exactly did you arrest them in the first place, Oz? You know that a holding cell wouldn’t be able to hold them for long. You should have called us in to handle it and kept it in-house.”

“No one is above the law.” Oz said matter-of-factly. “Cynic was breaking the law, and so I handled it. I didn’t join up with this organization to watch it turn into the Freedom Squad. We are not a lawless gestapo making up rules as we go along, to suit our own whims. We shouldn’t be out there doing whatever we feel like.” Oz shook his head. “If that’s what we’re going to be about, then I’m going to leave, and I’m taking all of my people with me.”

“Bye, Oz.” Half the room chorused.

Wyatt had never seen the man so dead set on any issue which didn’t involve brands of antibacterial soaps before. Oz had never really cared about the random crime the group committed in its efforts before, so he was guessing that there was more to this than just Oz taking a moral stand. The man was so squeaky clean that he made Sherriff Andy Taylor look like the Sherriff of Nottingham, but he was not someone who typically made waves or tried to have his own way all the time. He was a team player and went out of his way to be polite to everyone.
